The Making of AFORMA Knitwear

Where It Begins
We start with form. AFORMA’s knitwear is guided by the same principles that shape enduring buildings: balance, proportion, and structure.
For us, design starts with curiosity. It could be the rhythm of a city street, the play of light through glass, or the tactile memory of a piece of vintage knitwear worn soft by time. AFORMA is a space where these influences meet, not bound by one discipline, but shaped by many.
Our four debut styles, Echo, Facade, Vector, and Frame, are more than garments. They are studies in texture, proportion, and the interplay of structure and softness.
When we create knitwear, we think about how it will live with you. How it feels on your skin, how it moves when you do, how it becomes part of your own everyday rituals.
Inspiration Without Borders
Our creative process moves between worlds, fashion, art, objects, and interiors. A sweater might start with the lines of a drawing, the texture of a ceramic glaze, or the depth of colour found in an old photograph.
The debut collection, Echo, Facade, Vector, and Frame, carries this diversity of influence. Each piece tells its own story through texture, weight, and proportion, yet all share the same quiet intention: to make something you’ll want to return to, season after season.
Materials That Matter
We choose yarns for their integrity as much as their beauty. Italian-spun, chosen in small lots, each selected for softness, resilience, and the way it holds colour.
Working in limited runs allows us to be exacting, to make sure the hand-feel is right, the weight is balanced, and the knit will last. It also means there’s no excess. What we make has a place and a purpose.
The Craft
-
Sketch & Pattern — Designs begin as detailed sketches with stitch maps and proportion studies.
-
Sample Development — Small-batch prototypes are knitted to test weight, drape, and construction.
-
Refinement — Adjustments are made for fit, texture, and finish until the piece meets AFORMA’s standards.
-
Production — Final pieces are knitted on precision machines, then finished by hand — linking seams, attaching trims, and inspecting each garment.
Every stage is deliberate. We don’t overproduce; we keep each release focused and intentional.
The Making
In Portugal, skilled knitters bring our designs into being. Prototypes are refined until they drape just so, shoulders sit cleanly, and textures emerge with the clarity we imagined.
Even with precision knitting machines, the human hand is present, in the linking of seams, in the careful finishing, in the final check before it leaves the workshop.
Details You Discover Over Time
AFORMA pieces are designed to unfold slowly. At first, you see the shape, the colour. Later, you notice how a pattern catches the light, how the cuff sits against your wrist, how the weight shifts as you move.
Every knitwear piece sits comfortably alongside AFORMA’s other creations, jewelry today, more disciplines to come, forming part of a world where design moves easily between categories.
More Than a Sweater
This isn’t just something to wear. It’s something to live with. Something that accompanies you, changes with you, and earns its place in your life.
From the first spark of an idea to the final stitch, every step is a conversation between design, material, and the people who will wear it.
